Chapter 71: Above the Waves

The trouble began with something small enough to ignore and dangerous enough to matter.
Adrian lifts Lucy through the hatch, then returns for Claire when the floor collapses. Claire refuses to leave the deed box behind and nearly loses her footing.
Adrian understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. They had become unusually honest since the divorce began. Honesty did not make the choices easier, but it stopped them from pretending that ease was the same thing as peace.
They leap together to Owen's rescue boat as the boathouse tears free.
"You saved the evidence this time."
Neither of them called it forgiveness. Forgiveness was too large for one night and too fragile to demand.
Adrian answers: only because I had your hand first.
