The Divorce She Planned in Silence

Chapter 16: An Honest Answer

By Evelyn Hart · 140 words

For a few careful minutes, the world looked almost ordinary.

Claire answers that love survived longer than trust, and that she no longer knows what remains. Adrian hears the response outside the open office door.

Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. They had become unusually honest since the divorce began. Honesty did not make the choices easier, but it stopped them from pretending that ease was the same thing as peace.

Instead of using it as hope, he tells Naomi to proceed with fair temporary terms and refuses Eleanor's aggressive attorney.

"Her uncertainty is not permission for me to pressure her."

Neither of them called it forgiveness. Forgiveness was too large for one night and too fragile to demand.

That night Claire finds Adrian's wedding ring on the brownstone step beside a note.
