Chapter 26: No Answer

Claire had learned that silence was never empty. It held every sentence people were afraid to say.

Daniel's apartment is ransacked, but his father receives a postcard containing coordinates and the phrase north stair, noon.

Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. They had become unusually honest since the divorce began. Honesty did not make the choices easier, but it stopped them from pretending that ease was the same thing as peace.

Claire recognizes the coordinates as Bellweather and insists on joining the search despite Adrian's objections.

"You do not protect me by deciding what risks I am allowed to take."

Neither of them called it forgiveness. Forgiveness was too large for one night and too fragile to demand.
