Chapter 54: The Last Anniversary

Claire had learned that silence was never empty. It held every sentence people were afraid to say.

Their final anniversary arrives one week before court. Neither planned to acknowledge it, but Lucy gives them a drawing of the three of them in two houses joined by a bridge.

Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. For years Claire had translated Adrian's absence into excuses. Now she watched actions instead, and Adrian understood that no speech could shorten the distance he had made.

They take Lucy for pizza and share an ordinary evening more intimate than any gala.

"The bridge does not mean the houses have to become one."

Desire moved between them like weather: undeniable, changeable, and no longer mistaken for a promise.
