Chapter 23: The Empty Office
By Evelyn Hart · 132 words
For a few careful minutes, the world looked almost ordinary.
Adrian clears his office while employees avoid his eyes. Claire arrives for documents and finds him alone with a cardboard box, suddenly stripped of the identity that consumed their marriage.
Adrian understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. The old marriage had been built on assumptions. Whatever came next would have to survive questions, boundaries, and the possibility that love might not be enough.
She offers sympathy without rescue, and he admits he does not know who he is when he is not winning.
"Find out. Then decide whether you like him."
Adrian did not reach for a solution. He stayed, listened, and allowed the consequence to belong to him.
Federal investigators arrest Adrian in the lobby.
