Chapter 38: Taken

There were decisions that announced themselves and decisions that waited until every escape had closed.
Marcus forces Claire to a closed subway platform while Victor demands the Bellweather originals. Claire leaves architectural chalk marks for Adrian to follow.
Adrian understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. The old marriage had been built on assumptions. Whatever came next would have to survive questions, boundaries, and the possibility that love might not be enough.
Adrian follows her clues instead of charging blindly, proving he understands the language of her work.
"She is not waiting for rescue. She is showing us where to stand."
Adrian did not reach for a solution. He stayed, listened, and allowed the consequence to belong to him.
Claire triggers the station alarm as Marcus raises his weapon.
