Chapter 39: The Platform
By Evelyn Hart · 118 words
The city kept moving, indifferent to the private disaster gathering inside one family.
Claire blinds Marcus with a fire extinguisher and runs as Adrian reaches the platform. A shot strikes the tile between them.
Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. For years Claire had translated Adrian's absence into excuses. Now she watched actions instead, and Adrian understood that no speech could shorten the distance he had made.
Adrian tackles Marcus but stops before killing him when Claire calls his name.
"Do not become him for me."
Desire moved between them like weather: undeniable, changeable, and no longer mistaken for a promise.
Police recover Marcus's recorder containing Victor's order to frighten Lucy.
