Adrian is accused of authorizing payments to the shell contractor that sabotaged Bellweather. The electronic approvals carry his credentials and biometric signature.

Claire understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. For years Claire had translated Adrian's absence into excuses. Now she watched actions instead, and Adrian understood that no speech could shorten the distance he had made.

Claire remembers Adrian missing her hospital call during the same overseas trip when the first payment was made.

"Someone used the hours he cannot remember because he never looked back at them."
