The Divorce She Planned in Silence

Chapter 31: The Witness Who Lied

By Evelyn Hart · 132 words

There were decisions that announced themselves and decisions that waited until every escape had closed.

The recanting witness is Eleanor, who now claims Charles acted alone and Victor knew nothing. Adrian confronts her at the family estate.

Adrian understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. They had become unusually honest since the divorce began. Honesty did not make the choices easier, but it stopped them from pretending that ease was the same thing as peace.

Eleanor admits Victor holds proof that she covered up Charles's fatal drunk-driving crash twenty years ago.

"I was protecting you from losing your father twice."

Neither of them called it forgiveness. Forgiveness was too large for one night and too fragile to demand.

Adrian tells her he will expose the crash himself.
