Chapter 48: Eleanor in the Smoke
By Evelyn Hart · 135 words
Adrian once believed control could prevent loss. Lately, control seemed to be the surest way to cause it.
Eleanor admits she entered Bellweather to retrieve Charles's letters but denies setting the fire. Her burned hand proves she tried to extinguish it.
Adrian understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. The old marriage had been built on assumptions. Whatever came next would have to survive questions, boundaries, and the possibility that love might not be enough.
She gives Adrian a letter naming Victor as Charles's blackmailer and apologizes to Claire without asking forgiveness.
"I taught my son silence and called it strength."
Adrian did not reach for a solution. He stayed, listened, and allowed the consequence to belong to him.
The letter mentions a second archive beneath the Vale country house.
