Chapter 20: The Kiss They Did Not Plan
By Evelyn Hart · 149 words
Adrian once believed control could prevent loss. Lately, control seemed to be the surest way to cause it.
Adrian follows the watcher into the rain and is struck by a delivery bike during the chase. Claire cleans the cut above his eyebrow in the brownstone kitchen.
Adrian understood that the next choice would be remembered long after the explanation. Nothing between them was simple now. Attraction lived beside anger; tenderness stood beside evidence. Every kind act raised the same dangerous question: was this change, or merely fear wearing a better suit?
Fear strips away her distance; they kiss once, intensely, before Claire stops and names it grief rather than forgiveness.
"Do not turn one kiss into a future I have not chosen."
The moment did not repair what came before. It did, however, alter what might come after.
Lucy appears on the stairs and asks why Daddy is bleeding.
