The morning arrived quietly, as if it had been asked not to wake the town.

Theo stood outside the lantern-lit street, holding the one thing that should not have been there. It felt heavier than it looked, warmed by a hand that had vanished moments before.

This was not how the day had been planned. There should have been coffee, a short walk, and the comfortable work of pretending nothing had changed.

A familiar melody drifted from the empty room, soft enough to be mistaken for memory.

The sensible choice was to leave. Theo knew this with the calm certainty reserved for advice we have no intention of following.

A door opened somewhere beyond sight. Dust lifted through a bar of light, each bright speck turning slowly like a distant star.

"Hello?" The word travelled farther than it should have.

No one answered, but the object in Theo’s hand gave a small, unmistakable click.

Later, it would be easy to call that sound the beginning. In the moment, it sounded like a promise being kept.

Then someone knocked, and the ordinary world was over.
