By morning, the latest problem had been dressed as routine: a sudden transfer order. Everyone else treated it like paperwork. Dorian could feel the trap underneath it.

The case should have belonged to someone with more rank, more money, or at least better shoes. Instead, it landed on Dorian's desk with a coffee stain over the signature and a deadline that looked deliberately impossible. Selene arrived recklessly, carrying a photograph with the timestamp scraped away and the kind of expression that made even allies step back before asking questions.

"You saw this coming," Selene said. It was not an accusation yet, but it had the shape of one. Dorian looked past the question toward the river entrance, where two staff members were pretending not to watch them. The useful thing about fear was that it made people careless. They should have left then. Instead, Dorian opened the door, because retreat had become another name for letting someone else write the ending. Beside it sat a second object that made Selene stop breathing for half a second.

The object connected phase 1 of the fight to something older than the current scandal. the next witness is carrying a different name. Dorian understood the next move just before the hallway lights snapped on behind them. Footsteps filled the corridor, too many to belong to security, and someone on the other side of the door began to clap slowly.
