There are days that announce themselves. This one waited at the door.
Jonah stood outside the library, holding the one thing that should not have been there. It felt heavier than it looked, warmed by a hand that had vanished moments before.
This was not how the day had been planned. There should have been coffee, a short walk, and the comfortable work of pretending nothing had changed.
Inside the envelope was a photograph dated tomorrow.
The sensible choice was to leave. Jonah knew this with the calm certainty reserved for advice we have no intention of following.
A door opened somewhere beyond sight. Dust lifted through a bar of light, each bright speck turning slowly like a distant star.
"Hello?" The word travelled farther than it should have.
No one answered, but the object in Jonah’s hand gave a small, unmistakable click.
Later, it would be easy to call that sound the beginning. In the moment, it sounded like a promise being kept.
The answer was close now, hidden in the silence between two names.
